I studied Graphic Design & Animation at University. I worked as a TV Title Sequence designer for 10 years and became freelance when my kids started school. I have designed posters and logos, channel idents and textile patterns. It was exciting and I loved the creative challenge but as technology impacted the industry, work became almost entirely digital. I missed making actual marks on paper.

As a former designer, I had to work fast and come up with multiple creative suggestions based on target audience, budget and time constraints. I had to pitch ideas to clients and ‘sell’ the concept. I thrived on having a brief and a deadline but dreamed of what it would be like to be free of that.

It turns out that without an initial concept I sometimes struggle to talk in detail about my work. I have learned that it’s ok for an image to simply be beautiful. The viewer can bring context and if someone loves a piece of my work because the subject matter has resonance to them, that is such a bonus.

I do now, very occasionally, dream of working within the boundaries of a concept!
